Meet Monica
Monica Dudley-Weldon is a nationally recognized leader in biotechnology, health policy, and rare disease advocacy. She currently serves as an appointee of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to the Commonwealth Health Research Board, where she helps guide strategic investments in biomedical and public health research.
Monica is the Founder and CEO of the SYNGAP1 Foundation, the first organization established to accelerate research, awareness, and treatment development for SYNGAP1-related neurological disorders. Her leadership has united scientists, families, and policymakers worldwide, driving innovation and progress in rare disease science.
Previously, Monica served as a Life Scientist at Leidos, supporting the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment (OSD A&S) to execute the Department of Defense Biotechnology Manufacturing Strategy, a $1 billion national initiative advancing U.S. bioindustrial capabilities.
She advises government agencies, life science companies, and advocacy organizations on biotechnology manufacturing, research funding strategy, and federal health policy development through her firm, Monica Weldon Consulting, LLC.
Monica, a former secondary science educator with over 23 years in the classroom, brings a unique blend of scientific insight and human empathy to every stage she steps on. Her story began when her son became the first diagnosed patient with the rare SYNGAP1 gene mutation—a moment that transformed her life and launched a global advocacy movement.
Monica holds a bachelor’s degree in biology/psychology from East Texas Baptist University and a master’s degree in science law from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, specializing in healthcare regulatory and legislative policy. She has been recognized among Era Industry Magazine’s “Top 10 Most Influential Women Leaders of 2022.”
Today, Monica continues to inspire audiences across the country with her message of innovation, collaboration, and resilience—bridging the worlds of science, policy, and patient advocacy to shape the future of healthcare.
